IS BETTING AN INDICTABLE OFFENCE
TO THE EDITOR, i Sir, — Kindly reply through your " To Correspondents " column if betting is an indictable ofianoe ondev the law of New Zealand, and if, on one oooasion, Sir W. Fitzherbert, the present Speaker of the Legislative Council, was not charged with aaoh an offence, — I am, etc , Watchman. (The law does not recognise a betting transaction.. Betting not being a criminal offence, we should imagine was not likely to be an indictable one. We oannot reoall the exict olroamstaaoas conneoted with Sir W. Fitzherbert, alluded to by oar correspondent , bat it was, we think, m connection with the drawing of half-crown aweepa on an Anokland racecourse soon after the " Gaming acd Lotteries Act" came into f'irce, which prohibited such eweepß, — Ed.
