THE TARIFF
+ The following recommendations relative to Sir H. Atkinson's tariff proposals have been made to the Government by the Danedin Protection League :— That dried herbs, roots b*rks, gams, and solid extraotß be exempt from duty. That the duty should be the same on partially mado umbrellas aB on the madoup article: umbrella silk; forty-four Inches ana over m Width, Afpaoa and Zinella, free ; umbrella ribs m balk, ambralla Btloka, nnd all kinds of umbrella fittinga, free ; umbrella material to be m the roil and not cut up. That a duty of 25 per oont Bhonld be imposed upon German moulding picture frames, and a duty of 30 per cent on oil paintings under £2 In value. That drawer knpba, curtain poje rings, gas blooks," cnrtaCn poles (oQmpleted), roller ekate wheels, and all other turnery ahonld be charged 25 per cent fid valorcrp, duty. That tho duty proposed by the Conference oo jewelle y be endorsed. That all maohtnery, agricultural implements (exoept reapers and binders), and malleable castings should be included m the 20 per cont tariff, and that a duty of 20 per cent should be imposed upon all forgin^a op to five tons, %That tho recommendations of the Con* ference be adopted regarding the carriage manufacturing industry. That gimps, leather bindlnga, buttons, tufts, etude, and tapestries for upholstery purposes should be exempt; from duty. That shirtings and cotton goods, m the pioco, should beejcenipt from duty.
