William Evans Dempaie, publican and expressman, was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for being illegally en the premises of Neal and Haddow. Tne evidence showed that horse feed had been moved. Timaru, Jane 1. S. McSweeney. a young laborer, was oommitted for trial to-day on a oharge of forgery and uttering a cheque for £9 He bonght goo -3s to the value of £1 10 i from B»llantyne and Go,, drapers, and got ohange, In December last. The cheque was drawn m favor of William Anglan, an account of shearing, and wao signed by William Anglan. A ouriona fact is that the only Wm. Anglan m the district is a laborer, who was called as witness, and very muoh resembles accused. Dunedin, June 1. Arrived — Jasper, brlgantine, OapUJn Rogers, with 7845 bags BUgar for Danedin, and 4770 for Lyttelton, 42 days out from Mauritius. On May 14th she encountered a heavy W.N.W. gale, and hove to for ten hoars, and on May 20th she encountered another gale, with a terrific sea. Part of her fittings were washed overboard, and her oargo was slightly shifted. She was within 40 miles of the Solandera. On the 34th day oat from thence she had thick S.E, weather nntil arrival. At the annual meeting of the City Licensing Committee, all applications for renewals were granted except m the oase of the Universal Hotel, which, it was reported, was badly conducted. The Committee had made erquiry of their own motion, and were satisfied the complaints were justified. The case was adjourned for a week, but it was intimated that a license would not be granted to Mrs Diamond, the present holder. Bluff, JGne 1. The Waihora sailed for Melbourne at 7.30 a.m. to-day, with 12,800 sacks of oats, 28 horses, and 90 packages of oysters. The whole of this large cargo wag loaded In the short time of 12 hours. The forecabin Is full of grain, while there are 250 sioks of grain m the saloon.
