THE HOLIDAY.
. « The anniversary of the Q :een's Birthday was observed as a close holiday by the Aihbniton tradesmen. The excursion train to Timaru was bat poorly patronised by the townspeople only about a d< z?n booking at Ashbarton. The morning train from Timaru brought up the Sooth Canterbury Battalion consisting of the Walmate Rifles 21, under Captain Studholme and Lr.eut. Shaw ; The Timaro 42, Captain White; Temuka 31, Lieutenant Findtay ; Geraldine 22, Captain Pearpolnt ; Temuka Cadets 26, Captain Bryan ; Aihburton Guardß 42, Captain Sparrow ; Aahbarton Rifles 41, Captain Dolman ; Timaru Garrison Band 21, Bandmaster Partridge. The marjceivres of the Volunteers were watched with great interest by the townspeople and ▼littors, and the evolutions were In the whole very satisfactorily perf >rmed.
