. AUCKLAND, May 15. The Richmond, whioh arrived from Fiji, brings intelligence that the islands of Barahonra, Huiane, and B&iate.a, m the Society Group, were formally annexed by the French Government oa 17<,b, 18ch and 2 lot April reopeo'ively. No com* blned resistance was made by natives, bat whilst the Frenoh warship Deo 1 6s was at Huiane, a misunderstanding ooourred whloh resulted m the death of Lieutenant Denot and the wounding of several seamen. A, watering party had beßn sent ashore m oharge of Denot, and • shot was fired from the ship as a signal for the men to return, bat this was mistaken by the natives as a signal for the commence* meat of hostilities, and they fired upon the patty with the result stated. Toe matter waa afterwards explained, and t> native chief next day went on board tbe Deo 6*l and made signs of submission, , expressing regret at th v- fortunate mia> take and its ooneeqaenoea.
