Senator Blair, the author of the Bill proposing to expend £15,400,000 to diminish illiteracy in the United States (mainly in tbo South), has made a statement on the floor of the Senate in behalf of his pet measure to the effect that " every great newspaper in the United States has upon its editorial at aft a Jesuit, whose duty it is to attaok tho publio eohool system of the country at every opportunity." This ie how he explains the opposition to his Bill. No man who would make Buoh a statement is competent to champion a great measure. Muoh of his unpopularity will attach to his Bill. His action proves that % man may have an excellent education and yet be a fool \ he may not be illiterate, bat densely ignorant. " A little learning is- a dangerous thing," as a loaded gun in a child's herd. The Press of tho United States have done, and are now doing, more to promote the excellence of free-sohool system than ita statesmen.
