THE UNEXPECTED
The following is a note of some re. markable " windfalls," which havo recently fallen to various persons, varying m rank from the Queen to the peasant : £400,000, ot 40 lacs of rupees, to Her Majesty from an Indian prince towards tho protection of our Indian frontier from Kussian advance; £80000 to Her Majesty as a " Women's Jubilee Offering," m addition to number less presents of untold value from all sorts and conditions of men and women ; £3,000,000 to Mr McCalmont, a popular subaltern m the Scots Guards, from his uncle, the late Mr Hugh McClamont ; £100,000 to the St George's Hospital from tho same Bource ; £2,000,000 to Mr T. F« Burk, of Kent, from the late Mr Samuel B. Loan, (m no way related to him), who died m New Zealand; £200,000 to^a Mr Thompson, m consequence of the death of hiß brother ; £75,000 to the University College, London, from the late Mrßiobard Quain, F,_iS. ; £20,000 to a railway ganger, o£ County Kilkenny, m consequence of a decision of the Irish Court of Appeal ; £49,011 7s to the creditors or James H, Coupland, who failedfin 1869 ; £40,000 to the Chancellor , 6f the Exchequer, v to be applied towards extinguishing the National Debt," from the late Mr O'Reilly Dease ; £200,000 " to the poor of Newry," from the late Mr Henry Quinn, of Richmond, Surrey.
