THE PANAMA CANAL

PUSHING ON THE WORK.

The " Star " and •• Herald " of January 28th says : — " The Panama Canal reckons one mere contracting firm, that of Erttnger, Dephieux, Gaiter and Co, who are charged "with the construction of the locks- These gentlemen arrived on the isthmus on December 28th by the Pacifio Mail steamer Newport, and lost no time m reporting to the director-general of the canal, who did all m his power to hasten the installation of the new enterprise. "Without losing time the three members of the firm betook themselves to the d fEerent points where the locks are to be constructed The operations have commenced at the fifth division — La Boca and Corozal — and are continued every day m the different divisions of the line of the canal. We are assured that the contractors hive met the same zeal everywhere and the same goodwill to smooth the difficulties that were consequent on such a hurried possession of the chautiera. Important decisions have already been reached on several points, and will m a short lime be established beyond doubt. The operations are m a good way at Bohio Boldado, where will be tbe first lock (taming from tbe Atlantic), and at Ban Pablo and Matachin the works will be commenced m the shortest liana possible The third divieion proceeds wi'.h the lame activity m that which concerns it. On the hillside of the Pacific two locks have already been attacked, and la a few days it will be posilble to say tha same of others, th« ground plots of which are on the point of being given up. These rapid results havo only been possible on account of the activity which tbe director-general snd tbe divisional enginaer hava cot ceased to exert since the commencement of tbe different operations We may add, while speaking of the hillside of the Pacific, that it is absolutely untrua that the contracting firm of Baratoux, Lettelller and Co., of which M. Bourreau is the director, have Btopped their worka. This firm is contented to cede the chautiera de terraeeementa on which the locks must ,'pe constructed. Thus it is seen that the canal with lockß is on the road to completion, and that we are marching with rapid strides towards the final achievement of the greatest work of tha nineteenth cet likv, Culebra Is to have the electric light, the plant for which has already been supplied. It has been established to enable the uninterrupted carrying on of tbe excavation of the canal at that station throughout tho entire night.

PpiiLOWA.'sr's OintmeSt and Pills. — Colds, Coughs, Shortness of Breath)— These maladies iequire early and unremitting attention, for if negleoted they often end m asthma, bronchitis, or consumption. !£tie ointment well rubbed upon the chest and back, penetrating the Bkin, is absorbed and carried directly to (he longs, whence it expels all impurities. All the Wood ip the body is perpetually passing through the lunge, and there all noxiouß particles tending to disease can be quickly, thoroughly, and permanently neutralised, rendered harmless, or ejected from the system. Holloway's Ointment and Pills perfectly accomplish this purification; and through the blood thus oleased, the influence of these wonderful medicaments reaches the remotest parts of the human body, and thus oaxes all diseased aotion, whether internal pr external;
