ACCIDENT TO A TRAIN A SERIOUS AFFAIR A WONDERFUL ESCAPE.
[per press association], Inveroaegill, April 13, A railway accident on the Kingston lino on Wednesday night was more alarming than at first sappoßed. Aboat two mlle3 above Athol there are bridges m oloae proximity, with a catting between and while the north train was passing through thia after dark the engine ran into a bollock, vrhich waa carried on the oowcatoher till the bridge was nearly oroesed. The oaroaae then dropped off, and getting under the leading wheels derailed the engine. Fortunately the looomotlve did not diverge much from the track till clear of the bridge, otherwise there would have been a disastrous smash. Aa it waa the engine ran down the side of the embankment, which is over ten feet high, and lay there with the wheels up. Three waggons also left the metals, but tie couplings having parted the rear part of the train with the passenger carriages kept the road. Oookroft, the driver and his mate had wonderful escapes from the ponderous machine aa It rolled over. The line waa repaired and the tram proceeded with another engine after six hoars detention.
