MASQUERADING THIEVES
| An extraordinary trick haa lately been performed at Laval by two youthful thieves, who are we'l known to the French police. They first forged lctteis (says|the Paris correspondent of the " Daily Telegraph ") of recommendation f 10m high personages, ecclesiastic il ani lay, and then attired themselves as Franciscan nums. Their success in collecting funds was so great that it emboldened them to go to a convent in tho town for free lodgings and food. They were received by the Mother Superior of th>eßiabliahmenr, who invited them to return to her convent after they had done thrasr collection for the day. In the meantime, however, thoir conduct in the town, which was altogether unworthy of monks, nol to siy nuns, excited suspicion, and a police official watched them. When the rascals repaired to the convent at nightfall they were ushered into the refectory for their dinners, ub they ex pected, but were surprised to find themselves confronted there by two tall gendarmes, who spee ily arrested the pseudu nuns, and oonveyed them to jail.
