ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held last evening. Present: Meurs J. O« Danoan (Onairman), Oralgbead, Oook| Sawle, Elaton and Steele, FINANCIAL. The Chairman said that the Credit balance at the Bank was £47 Is 4d. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from the Board of Education on routine Bubjeots. — Miss Dick applied for an additional three month's leave of absence ou the ground of illhealth. The chairman said he had Interviewed the matter en .the subject, and the latter had stated that the existing teaching arrangements were most inconvenient. Two pupil teaoherß were new to their work aud he and bla assistant! had m consequence of Miss Dlok'i place being vao%nt a great deal of work put on them,, mora than they oan satisfactorily manage — It was stated that Miss Diok had already had three months leave and the members of the committee while ex* pressing sympathy for Mi&s Dick thought that m granting the request they would be negieotlng their duty to the Interests of the eohool — After discussion it wts resolved that the committee oonld not see its way to grant the request and it was decided to refer the matter to the Board — A circular conveying the resolutions to be discussed at the conference of Sohool Committees to be hold m Ohrlstohuroh was read. The committee expressed itsoonourrenca with the resolutions. master's report. The master reported that the attendance for the quarter ending March 31, was as follows : — No on roll -bove, 194; girls, 214 ; total, 408. Highest" attendanceboys, 180 ; girls, 171 ; total, 351 ; average boys, 144,8;. gir15, 164 1 j total, 289.9. The average given was the ** Btriot average" on which the staff and their Baluries are now regulated. It was questionable now whether the Committee shi.ul'i or should not take steps to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Aot. One circumstance bad certainly aoted detrimentally on last quarter's average, and also on that of last week which would he counted m the current quarter, viz., the opening of this school when the Hampstead oue was closed. The schools were so near to each other that the closing of one necessarily affected the attendance at the other, and he strongly recommended the Committee to come to a resolution on the matter. The pupil teachers, Messrs Bean, Barrett and Williamson closed their connection with the school on March 31, and Miss Hannah Curd and Frand Curd had entered on their duties. The new system of furnishing school requisites to the children was working satisfactorily. * The recommendations as to enforcing the compulsory clauses, and as to the terms of holiday running concurrently with those of Hampstead, were left m abey« ance. PAYMENTS. Accounts were passed for payment* Some other business was transacted and the meeting adjourned, ,
