Melbourne, Aptll 7. The Battarat Coffee Palace fire was a very serious affair. The inmates were imprisoned m the burning building by the falling m of the staircase, but a sailor who happened to be m the building, made ropes out of clothes, and succeeded m keeping most of the others cool till they were lowered. A few, however, leaped from the windows and were hurt. The spectators for a long time feared that a number must be burned. Two walls fell m, but the firemen escaped injury. Mblbouknb, April 9 A mass meeting of railway hands en Saturday carried resolutions protesting against the administration of Mr Allison Smith, Assistant Locomotive Superintendent, accusing him of causing en accident by altering the balance of wheels, and viewing his retention m the service with alarm. A further resolution demanded that the Board of Railway Experts should enquire into his fitness for the office,
