THE SHEEP RETURNS.

The last annual sheep returns for New Zealand, showing the number of cheep held m the colony on the 31et May, 1887, give the following figures : —
In 1883 tli3 total was 13,306,329, and the average increasa m the three follow - ing years was thus over 600,000 cheep. It will be eeen, however, that the latest return shows a decrease. That has not not been distributed all over the colony. In some districts thero was an increase, and m Canterbury a decrease of 300,000. The following table shows the number of cheep held m the two islands, respectivol y for the four years 9pecified : —
The North Island shoep have therefore increased by 220,578, and the- youth Island sheep havo decreased 239,215. '
