THE SYDNEY MUNICIPAL FRAUDS.
[per press association.]
Sydney, March 15.
It is stated that the Mayor's special audit of the Corporation accounts 'ias disclosed embezzlement of All the books and accounts from January. i880,,t0 June, 1881, have disappeared. Four officers of the Engineers Department will probably be suspended. Tne frauds are supposed to have been affected by altering the values and quantities on vouchers before presenting them to the Treasury.
Some time ago certain frauds- were exposed, and the criminals punished but the investigation on that occasion was not complete, one of the principals m the conspiracy having died. The Engineer at that time was suspended, but afterwards reinstated ; he now asserts that he has no knowledge of the defalcations, and that all papers signed by him have always been signed first by three other officers. He and three others were suspended to-day, pending further consideration.
The town was greatly excited by a rumor that an Alderman was implicated iin the frauds, and had comir.hted suicide. It subsequently turned out that an alderman named Parker had hanged himself this afternoon, but not because he was connected with the exj posures.
