Gentlemen, — ] I havo the hrnor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the number and date quoted m the margin with reference to the arrangements made for the sitings of the Resident Magistrates at Ashburton, and in* reply am directed by the Minister of Justice (o inform you that aa Captain Wray will be relieved of Waimate, k is hoped that he will be ablo to devote ample time to Anhburton. There will be no necessity for the Magistrate to retnrn to Timaru oa the day on which be arrives at Asliburton, and tha Government doe^ not tbink that any inconvenience should ba allowed to ari*>e on this account. The Minister desires me to add that he fa deeply sensible of the great aid rendered by Mr Ollivier to the Government, m taking tho eittings at Ashburton during an emergency. Be is also sensible of the fact that Mr Ollivier has given great satisfaction while presiding at Ashburton ; and the only reason why it is proposed to alter the present arrangements is that the re- organisation of the .Resident Magia tratob' districts no longer necessitates such an arrangement being continued. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your most obedtbnt servant, C. J. Haselden, Under-fc'ecretary, A* Harrison, Esq., J.P., and the oiher Justices of the Peace, Ashburton.
