Messrs G. W. Andrews and B. Bird were to-day nominated for the vaoancy on the Borough Council.
Mr H. M. Jonea has removed from the premises formerly occupied by him to the shop lately erected next to the Somerset Hotel. The shop is very commodious, and Mr Jonea is adding to his already large stook of stationery, fanoy ware, etc. A department is specially devoted to muaio, thero being a large assortment of pianos, organs, brass, and other instruments. Fanoy glassware, toys, etc, are displayed m great number and variety, and we understand that Mr Jones intends devoting more attention to the bookselling lino than m the past. The gas fitting arrangements at tho shop, which are very complete, were carried out by Mr Hardley.
In an article m tho " Fortnightly Review " Senor Castelar, the distinguished Spanish statesman, expresses tha opinion that tha forfeiture of all right to temporal power will be orowning glory of the Roman Ghuroh m this century. A cheap 3a 6d edition of Mrs Henry Wood's novels has been initiated with the publication of " East Lynne," of which it is stated no less than 40,000 copies have been sold m Great Britain alone. The type and printing of the new issue are all that could be wished, the neat red binding being specially attractive.
News comes from County Donegal, Ireland, that an extensive aohemo of land purchase is now m course of being effected on the Abercorn estate; Some weeks ago the Duke intimated to his tenantry m Donegal that ho was prepared to sell nearly 300 holdings. The offer was responded to, and the transaction now only requires the ratification of the Land Commissioners.
Lady burglars arc the latest development id England. At Pookham the othor day a Misa Jane Harding, described as " rom distingue and remarkably well dressed was committed for trial upon evidonoo dearly implicating her m fully half-a-dozen de* liberate burglaries. In one case she calmly broke into an elderly solicitor's villa, and robbed him of plate, money, and a pair of gaiters. The old fellow was so staggered by the proceeding that he had no nerve to remonstrate, much less give the alarm.
Tho Minister for Publio Works and the Colonial Scoretary arrived m Ohristohuroh yesterday and received a deputation from the Knights of Labor who asked if Government would re-oonsider their determination lo finish the fortifications at Lyttelton by prison labour, and if, m the event of Governmon6 refusing to do bo, they would find remunerative and Buitable employment near Christchurch for the unemployed. Mr Mitchelson promised to telegraph to the Minister of Defence on tho first question, and to make enquiry as to what works were suitable for the unemployed. Government were determined to undertake no relief works m the vicinity of towns.

Pleuro-pneumonia has made an unwelcome appearance among the cattle m Aberdeenshire. The soene of the outbreak is the parish of Piishgo, where, however, bII due precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of infeolion.
The speaking telephone has been successfully used m ministering to fever patients without running the risk of infeotion. A telephone is fixed at the bed of the patient and within reach, so that the patient can talk to friends or visitors m other rooms of the house, or listen to a book read.
A slight Napoleonio demonstration took place on January 9th on the oooasion of the celebration of the annual Mass at Saint Augustine for the repose of the soul of Napoleon 111, It took the shape of an eagle surmounting the staff of a tricolor flag oarried by a few zealots along the boulevards. Thia may add to the anxiety that exists m some quarters to see an effective system of emigration established for their benefit.
