LOCAL AND GENERAL.
General regret will be felt at tho announcement of tho death of Mrs Hugo Friedlander which took place at about six o'olook last ovening. The deoeased lady, who had been m delicate health for a long time previously, had been confined to the bouse for months past, and for some weeks her recovery had been wholly despairbd of, though all that oould bo done to alleviate her sufferings was, it is needless to say, done under the unremitting attention of Dr Tweed. Mrs Friedlander had a wide circle of friends who will unfeignedly mourn her departure from among them, and will heartily sympathise with Mr Friedlandor m his bereavement.
A monster tea meeting and concert under tho auspices of tho Women's Christian Temperance Union will be held this evening m the Oddfellows' Hall. Addresses will be given by Mrs Colonel Packe, Mra Cawsey, Revs E. A. Scott and A. Blake, and the chair will be ocoupied by Major Steward, A report will be presented by Mrs R. Alcorn (secretary). The programme will be enlivened by vooal and instrumental music
An adjourned special general mooting of the members of the Ashburton Tradesmen's Racing Club was held last evening. Mr J. C. Duncan occupied the chair. It was decided to invite applications for tho post of secretary. It is probable that the race meeting of the Club will bo held on Thursday, May 21th (Queen's Birthday) and a liberal programme will bo provided. A correspondent informs us that tho Massey Reaper and Binder had a most successful trial at Pareora, and elioitod most onthusiastio encomiums from all present, which were embodied m the form of testimonials to its numaroua merits. Fourteen other machines were working simultaneously m the same paddook, and the contrast between tho work done by the older implements and that per{ormed by the Massey maohino is stated to have been greatly m favor of this latest development of mechanical skill.

This morning before Major Steward, J.P., j J. H. Inglis was charged with drunkenness and with using obscene language. On the firßt charge he was discharged with a caution and on the second he was fined 203, or m default twentj-four hours' imprisonment. It is proposed to hold a sheep dog trial at Tinwald at an early date. There will probably be two evonte, three if funds admit. The services of Mr C. Jephson have been I secured as secretary, with whom entries can I be made at once. An elderly man named Thomas Jones, a laborer, met with an acoident of a serious nature a few days ago. He was riding on the shaft of a dray swinging his legs, when the horse kicked out striking one of the limbs and fracturing it. He was conveyed tc the Hospital, whew he now lies m a precarious candition. The Registrar-Genoral publishes m the " Gazette >: a return of the estimated population of tho colony at 3 Lst December last,' which is set down as 603,361.
