SENSATIONAL ESCAPE FROM DEATH
A sensational escape from death Is reported from Ballarat. . Michael and John CuNiuan were sinking m tbe Young Sn'feman Company's mine at a depth of 275 feet. They used an ordinary miners bnoket, with a " tail " rope attached. The signal was given to draw the backet up, when Michael discovered that his ankle was entangled m the tail rope. His brother, la trying to release him, got h ■ wrist caught between the rope and his brother's foot, and tht? two men were drawn to the surface, one being suspended by the wrist and tbe other by the ankle Both were sobering intense agony. At about 50 feet from the surface the brakeman heara their cries, and he stopped the engine, and tbey were thuß suspended over the shaft 200 feet deep. Ascertaining the nature of the occurrence, the brakeman soon bad them at the snrfaoe and released them from jeopardy. The most extraordinary feature of the case Is that the frail tail rope, which was much worn and frayed, should have sustained the weight r.f the two men.
