LORD BRASSEY ON THB COLONIES.
Lord Brassey, m a letter, deprecates the alienation of public lands m the colonies.
Lord Brassey, m delivering an address to tbe London and Provincial Chambers^ of Commerce, admitted that the colonial defences were skilfully 'directed, and eulogised the soldierly qualities of the Australian troops. He said that Sydney and Melbourne had set a noble example m building graving docks suitable for effecting repairs to vessels of the Imperial Navy. He insisted on the defence of Albany, Thursday Island and Port Darwin being carried out, and urged the Chambers to cultivate public opinion m the direction indicated. The Duke of Cambridge, who was present, endorsed the opinions of Lord Brassey, and Lord Chas. Beresford thoroughly agreed with the necessity for defending the stations named. Alter hearing the views of Lord Brassey, the Chambers resolved to make increased efforts to defend the ocean routes.
