Auckland, January 23. A man named Mark Spratt was found dead m a paddock at Mount Eden this morning. He had gone there to work, and was suddenly taken ill and died m a short time.
Christchuroh, January 23 On Saturday afternoon Rett's sswmlll at Viewhill, together with a house and a stable belonging to Plaskett, and a qaantlty of bubh, was destroyed by fire. The township of Oxford was endangered about the same time by a fire whioh started i" Weld's bush. Rain coming on about 3 o'clock ohecked the flimeo and prevented further damage. None of the buildings destroyed were insured.
The report on the annual valuation of the City states the value Of rateable property to be £228,899, an iuoreasa of £11,000 on the valuation of last year. The Lighting Committee of the City Counoil have been authorised to invite taudars fur lighting the City by eleotriclty. It was stated that the Com mi t tee had already had an offer which would furnish eight times as much light ai the present gas system at a cost of several hundreds a year less,
