Melbourne, January 21. Mauritius advices regarding the sugar market show a deficit of 48,220 bags, but the manufacture is actively proceeding. Freights are scarce at 26. to 255, and 5 per cent. Only two or three small cargoes were shipped during the month.
London, January 21. The wheat market is firmer,, with an upward tendency, owing to the continued cold weather. Ex warehouse remains at 34s <5d to 355 ; off coast cargoes are quoted at 34s 10-343 od. The number of quarters afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,430,000, and for the Continent 190,000. The flour market is dull. New Zealand ex store is quoted at 235.
Mutton tallow is quoted at 273 3d, and best beef at 26s per cwt. An increased demand is likely owing to a speculative movement for a rise.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited, has received tbe following cable message from London, dated 20th January :— Tallow — Market brisk, the demand is partly speculative and partly consumptive. Good mutton and beef tallows are worth respectively 28s and 25s 6d per cwK
