The ordinary monthly meeting of the County Council, to have been held to-day, has been postponed till Friday next, Vfo understand that it is rather uncertain whether the Carrie Swain Dramatio Company will appear m Ashburton. At the B. M. Court this morning, before Mr R. Alcorn, J.P., and Mr D. Williamson, J.P., Alexander Reed, for vagranoy, was ordered to be imprisoned for three calendar months with hard labor. The annual general meeting of tho Ashburton County Hunt Club tooonsider applioaions for the position of huntsman, to eleot officers for the ensuing year, and for the tranßao ion of general business, is appointed for Saturday, 7th iust., at 8 p.m., at the Commeroial Hotel. +■. We desire i to call attention to the fact that the tea meeting Fn connection -with Tjpwald, Presbyterian Cburoh is fixed for Tuesday evening, 10th instant, at 6.30 o'clock, The opening services of the ohuroh take place on Sunday, Bth mat, at 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m., and will be conducted by the Rev. He ; " Not at my time cf life, my dear. Billies overdue." j A writer m the London " Times " states there is a great aotivity at present amongst the emissaries of the Glan-na-Gael Sooiety. He asserts as a fact that conspirators have now m their possession m London no less than 200owt of dynamite, and that if their plans are not circumvented great disasters are certain to happen m that city. Tho mean man who would rob a church has found his way to Hawera, aooording to the "Hawera Star." A lady recently put one shilling into Dr Barnardo's poor box at the Anglioan Churoh, the subscriptions to be devoted to providing penny dinners for poor boys. She was present a day or two later when it was opened, and was found to con. tain only a sixpence and a threepenny-bit. The lady giver naturally wondered whether some thirsty thief finds the subscription box a frequent friend m need. Daring the late fire at Wellington some " new chums," who had just landed from the B.s. Tongariro, and were staying at Orr's City Buffet, lost all their belongings. It was, as ibe •' New Zealand Times " remarks, a sorry welcome to their new life m this colony. Two persons have just died (says an ex. change) at Bradford from hydrophobia, one a publican who was supposed to have been inooulated by the virus from the saliva of a mad dog, applied to a scratch or a out on bis hand, and the other a farmer residing at Tong, who was bitten a few weeks ago by a mad dog. In the case of the latter, at the Bradford Infirmary, the Buisson treatment of vapor baths and tho sweating process were resorted to m the hope of saving life, but without effect. Just before the prorogation a " special " wired :— I have authority for saying that the Defence Minister haß determined to reduce the capitation allowance paid to Volunteers by a considerable sum. In future the capitation will probably be £2 for garrison corps and 80s for country corps. The, present allowance is £3 all round.
