Attempted Incendiarism.
Auckland, December 29. Tha house of Mm Mary O'Oonnell, Franklin road, was dhoovered on fire last nigh-. The flames were suppressed hy the neighbours, who found the doors and windows ail securely fastened. Tiro separate fires were started with rubbish saturated with kerosene, and the furniture had all been reaiored. Mrs O'Oonoell was near the house when the fire was firat observed, bat went away, refusing to give op the key. She was arrested later on, when she dssllned to give Information as to the Insurances She said somebody must have stolen her furniture and get fire to the house. Returned. The ruisoiotf boat and cutter have returned, lhey were on the reef at :Vfotutapu, and those on board had no provisions exospt a potato eaoh. The Rev D. A telegram received by the polloe state* that the body of a man, name unknown, was found on Wednesday on the bank of the Wairan river, near Tophouse. The man was evidently going m search of work from one station to another. This is the third accident i a the Wairau river within a few months. One or two bridges are badly needed at different places, as the Wairau goes through a large tract of country Inquest. JDunbdin. December 29. At the inqueat on John Reason, a verdict was returned that he died from peritonitis accidentally caused, by falling down a cliff.
