ASHBURTON CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
Tho ninth annual sports under the aaaplces of tbe Aahbnrton Caledonian Soolety «rerd held oa the Society's grounds, yesterday. A strong nor-west to some extent marred tbe otherwise fine day, and somewhat interfered with tbe competitors m certain of the events. From an onlooker's point of view, however, these was not very much to find fault with m the weathor, until late m tbe afternoon when the wind In or eased m strength, and * good deal of dust was blown about the gronnd. Tbe attendance was large, tbe counter attraction m the shapi of the oheap excursion to Ohristohuioh making no appreciable diffarenoa m th < number of thoße visiting the ground, comparing tbe present with former years. Tbe lengthy programma of athletic events, and Highlend mnslo and dauolng was eatiefso torily gone through, the various officials one and all working their hardeit to make the affair a aacoeas. Mr Henry, of the Commercial Hotyl, had tbe publ loan's booth, and Mr W. 0. Daviß had charge of tbe booth for refreshments of a lighter nature. An excellent luncheon was provided by Mr Honry. Tha programme, as before stated, was got oft In a satisfactory manner. The pi pa muaio though it brought out only two oompetit r«, Messrs Monro and McKay was adjudged ex* oallent. la both the pibroohs and marches, and the reels and a ralhspeys, the money was equally divided, the Judges thinking the men about eqial. McKay was considered slightly the better m the pibroch*, bnt he fell a Uttlo short of his opponent m the marches, evidently have bestowed less attention on his attitude than on tbo mutio. la tbe reels and strathspeys, Monro neutralised the advant»ge he gained, on account of MoK»y playing rather too slowly by coming to a stop wii£O aaoh oh'jnid not hive been tbe ar.ue. In the highland dauoing Monro o&rried all before him, his style belug iv the opinion of competent judges, just what that of a highland dancer ehoq!4 be, T. M<\K%y gained plenty of honors and he bids fair, if he progress at tbe rate he bas done, to prove a very hard nut to crack both at pipe music and danoing. Banks «ras m nothing like bis usual form, and failed to infuse into his dancing the life and fire which is a most important characteristic of highland dances, The athletfc events call for but little mention, there being nothing speoial m connection with them. The big event, the Grand Handicap fell to J. W. Clinch, one oi the eoratoh men who won two out of the three heats and oame m third lv tbe other. For the bayonet exerolse two team* competed representing tho Rifles and Cadets . Of course the boys wero entirely out of it as far as a chanoa of the pn'ze was oonoerned. Still the lads nude a very creditable show especially when It is considered that they only had tho benefit of a week's instruction. Messrs Monro, T. McKay, Mablu and Robinson supplied tbe pipe music that was required. The Ashburton Band was on the ground, and helped to enliven the prccoedlngs. Some commotion was oauqed m the afternoon by an individual who bad jjnbjbed tog freely falliDg into the olutobes of the polloo. He objected strenuously to being Uten Into custody and used the powerful arms and legs, ho had been endowed with to baok up his ot" jeottoni. A imill orof 4 WO oolleoted,
many of whom showed a disposition to obstrnot tbe police, ani when the "drank"' wan being tbrast into a oab someone threw a couple of empty bottles, one of «rhiob hit an onlooker on tbe head, and hurt h : m severely.
