CHRISTCHURCH BICYCLE RACES.
Chbisxchoboh, December 26. The bicycle races at Lancaster Park were a' tended by some 6000 pecple. The racing was very interesting owing to the presence of Fred Wood, the professional cbamion rider of the world, In being engaged iv several of the best races, the one, five, and ten miles, for prizes aggregating to £100. The five mile and first heats of the one mile wore deoid' d to-day. In the first heat of the one mile Woud met N. Hull (Pioneer), G. Howlison (Dunedin), Uandysidea ( vVaitemato), Oharlesworth (Uhriatcnuroh), and Barlow (Bangiora.) Wood and Hall ran m compaoy till the last 200 yds, when the champiou drew away, Winning easily by 3yde, Handyaideg (24j8ec«) second. Tha second heat wbh won easily by Wilmot (North Canterbury), Bean (Uhriatchurch), Beoond, Steadraau (Dunedin), third. Brown, the English rider, waa nowhere. Time — 2miu» 58sec3. In the five.milo race Wood wus Ist, Wilmot 2ud, Handyaides 3rd, Kerr (Dnnediu) 4th, Bariow sth, Brown 6th Hall, Charlosworth, und Howard (Waitemata), also started. Hall, Wood, and Wilmot, m this order, ran together until 300 yds from the post. Wood' then spurted past Hall, who, m endeavoring to spurt, njiHsed hio podul and fell heavily, dislocating his wrist. Wood wou by 30yds from Wimot, the others a long way behind. Tirae~l6mina 62 2-sth sees. The 10-mile handicap was won by £tead,man (North Christohurch), 400 yds. Time — 34mins 3£aeos The Ladies' Bracelet resulted m a dead heat between Handyfides and N. X Hall. It will ba run off 'to morrow. In the half-mile raoe Bteadman and Bean came into collision. Both received severe cuts about the face, but no more eeriou j injuries.
