c Auokiand, Eecember 17. It was Intended to open the Calliope Dock early m January next, the ceremony to be eondooted by Admiral Fairfax, and one of the vessels of the equadron to be dookpd. The Admiral, however, has informed Mr Waddell, Chairman of the Harbor Board, that his engagements will be of Booh a character that it Is not likely the ceremony can take place at present. He adds, however, that he would return to Auckland about the middle of February with H.M.B. Calliope, and would then be pleased to assist In the opening of the dock by putting that vessel Into It. Wellington, December l<f. The deputation which waited on the Fire Underwriters' Association urging tbe reduction of Insurance rates, have received a reply that the Association are unable to make any reductions In existing rates, Deoembor 18 Mr James Mills, M.H.B. for Port Chalmers and General Manager of the Union Steamship Company, to-day plaoed the Takapuna at the disposal of members for a trip round the harbor and bsys. The water being smooth as » mill pond a Urge number of legislators took advantage of the trip. ■ The steamer returned to the wharf shortly after six after * most pleasant outing.
