Olairo and Athenais, as girls, had been pupils tt the Saore Cob tr Convent, where Athenais had envied the aristocratic bearing of Olaire. She now gloats over her triumph, for the Dake marries her, and thus her social position Is higher tha a that of her rivrl. Philippe does sanction It, and a duel with piatola m the consequence, Piillippe does not fire, and tho Duke's bullet strikes Olaire, who arrives m time to save her husband's life.
