The returns of the Ashburton Hospital for ! the month of November, 1887, are as follows: In hospital on the Ist, 12 ; admitted, 7 ; discharged, 11; remaining is hospital on 30th, 8. • There was a seoond representation of the Trial of John Barleycorn at tbo Oddfellows' Hall last evening. There was a very fair house, and the performance passed off most suooeßßfully. The perfeotly healthy and aotive man who tain perfeot physical oondition, should weigh 2^lb for every inoh of his height. Of oourse, many apparently healthy men are heavier than this rule would indioate. At a Jubilee fete one of the Princesses said to the Crown Princess of Prussia, " It's a long time since so many of us were together. Doesn't it look as if Tnsßaud'a had broken loose ?" The amount of money invested m Savings Bank- and Building and Provident Societies m England was put down at £30,000,000 m 1840, and £160,000,000 m 1886. Igypt is again becoming a land of onionculture. Large quantities are yearly shipped to Europe from Alexandria and other ports. A few years ago tho trade hardly existed, while m two months of last year alone 14,000 tons were shipped to Liverpool. Tbe looal paper at Opotiki has a commendatory notice of the beer brewed at the Opotiki brewery. It says : " During the summer months every farmer should have a five or ten gallon k.g on hand aocording to tho numbex of hands ho employs. Water, during these months is very unhealthy, m fact positively dangerous to life." Tho " Court Journal " says that lighting by electricity will be the rule at almost all tho West End threatres before the year is over. It is trying to the faces of the fair ones, but if thoy have any expression m their physiognomies it will be deteoted by the eleotrio light, and that will be so muoh to their artistio if not their personal advantage. The consumption of sugar m the last fifty years has gone up from 151bs to 701bs per head ; of tea from l£lb to 4}lbs per head ; of tobacoo from 081 bto l*3olb per head ; and so on. According to Yucatan journals that region has been visited by a fabulous number of bats, wbioh have attaokod the cattle, doing muoh do .tiuotion and making meat eearce. The Bailway Department advertise an excursion to Mount Somers on the Bth inst. The fares have been fixed at an exceedingly low figaro, and should the weather prove fine, thero is no doubt that a large number of townspeople will take advantage of the opportunity afforded them.
The installation of B.W.M. and officers of the Thistle Masonio Lodge, C 27, 8.C., took plaoe at the Orange Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of visiting brethren, the St. John's, Somerset, Methven, md Rakaia Lodges being represented. The installation were performed by Bro the Rev Jamss Hill, D.G.M. The following officers were installed:— B.W.M., Bro T. Williams; D.M., Bro J. Corbett ; S.M., Bro T. Court 8.W., Bro J. Cockburn ; J.W., Bro J. Banger ; Secretary, P.M. Bro W. Sparrow *, Treasurer, I.P.M. Bro T. Smith ; 8.D. , Bro F. Schneider ; J.D., Bro J. Elliott ; M.0., Bro A. Orum ; 1.G., Bro W. Baylis ; Tyler, Bro T. Morgan. The ceremony of installation was performed m a very impressive manner, and at its oonolusion the D.G.M. presented, on behalf of the Lodge, a very handsome Past Master's Jewel to I.P.M. Bro Smith. The jewel was manufactured by Mr B. Murray, and its workmanship refieota the greatest credit on him. A banquet was subsequently held at wbioh the usual Masonio toasts were honored. The proceedings were enlivened with songs contributed by the brethten, and a very enjoyable evening waa spent.
There are twenty-one pledged teetotallers m the House of Representatives, and a largo j_u__bar of abstainers bee-idoa them not oonneoted with any Booiety. The revenue of Bellamy's is seriously suffering.— " Bruce Herald."

What next ? A sparring exhibition for the purpose of raising funds for the erection of a churoh at Nantasket, Mass., was held at the Nanta. ket Boaob Skating Rink. Eighteen hundred people were present, and the affair netted fifteen hundred dollars towards the fund. The prinoipal attraotion was John L. Sullivan, who volunteered his services.
