SHIPBUILDING OF THE FUTURE
Ia his address at the opening meeting of tho London session of the Institution of Naval Architects a few months ago, Lord Ravensworth spoke of aluminium as a possible rival to Iron m the shipbuilding of the future- It Is about one of the most plentiful metals m the earth's crust, but the great expense of obtaining It from Its ore has hitherto restricted its use. It has been nearly as de_r as silver, so that lt would appear that m thinking of Ita use m shipbuilding Lotd Ravensworth was looking well ahead. Within the last few months, however, a now process has come Into use for obtaining sodinm, and by its means aluminium, at ono-fonrth the expense hitherto neoessary. The process Is the Invention of Mr H. Y. Carter, of New York, and works for it have been erected ln the Belvedere road, Lambeth. We are still a long way off from being able to construct ships of allminlum, but the new Invention la a step. Aluminium Is one-fourth the weight of Iron, la said to be as strong, and, moreover, does not rust.
