STRAME CASE OF WIFE DESERTION
An inoident of an extraordinary eharaoter has just come nnder the notice ef the Cheshire magistrates. At Stock* port a summons h.s been taken out againat • man, named Johnson, for deserting hia tvife 27 yeara back. The wife entered the box and stated that she married the defendant 30 years back. For aome anexplained cause he deserted her immediately after their first child, a girl, waa born and for 27 yeara he had left her to maintain herself. She could glean no tidings about him, and she had, indeed, long aince given him up for dead. When attending the funeral of a relative at Marple, Cheshire, the other day, she heard that her long-lo.t husband waa living at Stookport with another woman, by whom hs had several ohildren. She made . enquiries and found that lt waa true and at onoe procured a summons for maintenance. In Court Johnson was Introduced to hia daughter 26 years of age, whom ho had never seen aince ahe waa an infant. He admitted the offence, and the magistrates ordered bim to pay 10a weekly towards his wife's maintenance.
