LONGBEACH ROAD BOARD.
, The monthly meeting o£ this Board was held on Friday, November 18th. Present— Messrs J. Grigg (Chairman), 8. Holland, J. Williams, J. Bishop, and At Dawson, CORRESPONDENCE Letters were read (I) From the Goldstream Road Board, stating that a meeting would be called to consider the proposed works on Surveyor's road ; m the meantime any work done by the Longbeaoh Board would be at its own cost—lt was pou ted out that tbis was the only road crossing the Hinds which bad a traffio bridge, and that on the Longbeaoh Bide a metalled road had been made to the river, but on the Goldstream side it waa impassible m the wet season. It w»a resolved to apply to the County Council to vest the control of that portion of tha road -'ividingrthe two districts m this Board (2) From Manager N.Z.L. and Trust Company, asking the Board to reconsider the matter of giving relief to the storm water on tho Mill road, — It was resolved to again write to the County Council, asking them to widen the swing panels on the drain crossing the road opposite* Davieß' late property. stravKvoa's bbpobt. The Surveyor reported as follows .*— (1) Floodwater, Flemington and Tinwald Distriots: In coDJunotion with Messrs Holland and Bißhopand the County Engineer, a thorough inspeotion was made*bf the watercourses above Tinwald. As the matter was well explained m the report presented by the Engineer to the Oounoil at its last meeting, it is unnecessary for us to enter into details ; we may say that we consider th« making of a storm water channel along the Timaru Traok the only feasible way of giving relief to the distriots .affeoted, and m thia your Committee oonours. Sinoa bar visit another flood has occurred* almoßt worse than the previous one, as we Inspected a good portion of the diairiot. During this we have been able to judge of the capabilities of the creeks and drains to carry the flood water. It is quite apparent that the present means are insufficient to oarry even a portion of the floodwaters that we have been having this season. We consider that it almost requires canals to give relief. Anyhow we are inolined to believe that it would. pay the country between Longbeaoh Road and the river Asbburton to acquire sufficient land and have Taylor's Creek, Ford's Creek, and Dawson's Creek widened to a sufficient extent. (2) Beach Road: The metalling of portion* of this road has been completed. (3) Waterton Road : The temporal* bridge over Tay'or'B Creek Beems to have suffered from the late flood. When inspected, the water was too high to ascertain its position* but we instructed the maintenance man to put it right as quiokly as possible. (4) Surveyor's Road: A considerable quantity of water haß been coming over this road and has washed out a sill bridge. We would ask authority to have piles driven and ♦he bridge replaced. Seventeen chains ot drain near the bridge have been oleanedont* (5) Brown's Road: With Mr Holland wa inspected this road. As with most tt th« othera m the dis riot, it Buffers txwr* ft Juner abundance of water, more esp^ oiaU y 'JJ^ top ana lower end ol ibr. -~la y V. A ion. waerp.ole quantity of water lays on the road, sut there is no way of making an outlet, for when it would be required Ford's Creak tg enable to take more than half, of that if the water that should go down it. (6) Graham's Road : We have arranged to have the work at Lysaght's Creeks done. We no'ice that a large quantity of flood water comes into the creek at Griffith's corner ; m fact, more than it is able to carry. We think this is owing to all the water between tbia creek and Wood's Creek being drained into the former; forinstanoe opposite Hyland'u we notice there is a wateroonree cross the road, but is prevented from carrying anything, owing to the fences and road formation. (7) Boundary ana MoLennan'a Roads * The Bridges on these roada have been repaired. (8) The maintenance man's diary lies ou the table.
