The Pebbly Hills diggings, aboat 24 miles from town, are attracting some attion, and the number of men on the field has been doubled within the pact week, there being now about 60 on the gronnd, mostly settlers m the Hedgehops district adj ining. The correspondent of the •' Southland Times," while deprecating a rash for the field says that gold seems to be very evenly distributed' all getting a share. There is aboat 2ft of wash dirt. One party, however, have sank a shaft 15ft and come on a seoond layer of wash, which is said to bo richer that the surface one. Parties started from town to-day to estabMah Btoreß, which hare been mach wanted While there hare been statements that 15b to £2 a day hays been made, it is safe to say that the claims return wages only, or about 7" a day. The site of the diggings is the O'ago University endowment, and is about 14 miles from Woodlands station on tha Dunedln line. It is expected that little will be done during the summer months, unless public enterprise brings m a water race, water already fulling. The diggings now extend over a distance of 4 miles.
