Suicide. Auckland, October 31. Mrs Emma Field, Alexandra street, committed eu'eide by drowning m the Domain pond. Deoeased was a widow and had been low spirited since the death of her husband three weeks »go. The body was found on Sunday at noon and m the vicinity of the pond were a parasol — bonnet and drear, la the pocket of which was a letter addressed to Dr McKellar, enloaing £3 for medical attendance and stating her intention to drown herself Deoeased was 47 years of age, and had no relatives m the colony. Fires. This morning at two o'clock a fire on Mount Bosklll road destroyed Lyell's grocery store and dwelling, Fitch's drapery store and dwelling, and a cottage owned and occupied by Armstrong. No water supplied. The furniture and stook were nearly all savedAn incipient fife at LamW flour mills, Fort street was discovered early on Sunday morning. Very little damage was done. : ' Deaths. John Wallace, of Fapatoltol, died on Saturday from creeping paralysis. Thos. Corkwell, his brother-in-law, died suddenly the same day from hetrfc disease Pensioners Settlement. Tafbanga, October 31. At a public meeting resolutions were passed strongly urging Government to open Grown lands under fr«e selection, and asking the Minister of Lands to set aside five thousand acres, Papatoi block, now being purchased from the Native*, as a pensioner settlement under the proposed scheme for the introduction and settlement of pensioners. The block is ezcelleut land, and well salted to the purpose.
