SCOTCH CONCERT

The annual conoert under tbe auspice of tho ABhburton Cjledonlrm Society wa held m thb Oddfellowb' Hall last evening As is ÜBual with the Society's concerts, I there was a large attendance, and last evening the hall was hardly hrge enough to aooommodate the hrpo orowd The ccoupanta of the back seats were at times rather rowdy and testified thelc disapproval of any delay In a noisy manner. Tbo proceedings were opened by tho Highland salute by the company and the singing of the National Anthem. A team of the Aahburton Rifbs under Captain Dolman then went through the sword buyonat and sword exorclßos. Tbe former waa done m really exoellent style and tho latter, conaideriug the Bhort time it has been practised waa highly creditable Mr D. McLean, the popular president of the Society, gave the Highland Fling, an item whioh waa loudly applauded. Mlsb Kidd, was warmly applauded for her song "Ob 1 the airte the wind oan blow." Mr McLaan L'unn waa enoorcd for his rendition of " Oomo under my plaidlo " Alter reels and strathspeys by tho Kyle yoilln party, Mr D. Brick danoeJ an Irish jig In costume, winch wan redomandod. A-XB Orlap waa encored for the song "Coming through the rye." Mra John Beid sang " Gloomy winters* noo awa " and had to respond to an unanimous encore.' Mr Johnston gave a violin bolo, aftor whioh Miss Mary Currle gave the aong " Wee jouky daidlea " which wsb redemanded, Mr T. McKay danced the Gillie Galium m an exoellent manner and Master Mollae danced a Sailor's hornpipe m ooatume so well that he had to repeat it. Tho first part of the entertainment was brought to a close by a very pleasing rendition of " Kolvin Grove " by Mra Dunn. The second part was opened by a team of the Ashburton Guards under Color Sergeant Kelr going through the aword .exoroisa, an item which waa greeted with warm applause. Mrs Crisp gave the aong "Ye banks and braes" very pleasingly, after .which Messrs McKay and Lyons danced a double sailors hornpipe, the audience not being satisfied till this item had been repeated. A Bong by Mrs John Reid followed and m reaponce to Bn undeniable enoore she gave " Annie Laurie." Miaa Henry was encored for the song •• Scottish blue bells" and responded with " Juaiita " The next item was a trio *' Willie brewed a peck o' mauJt " by Messrs Dunn, Lambie and Craighead, aftor which Mies Carrie gave "Loch-nagar," for which she waa warmly encored. Mr N. Fi zgerald gave au Irish jig and of course had to repeat it. The next number, a duet m Highland coßtume, " When ye gang away Jamlo '* by Mr and Mrs Maclean Dunn was also encored. Miaa Kldd gave a pleasing rendition of " Auld Edinburgh criea " whloh was followed by the Reel of Tullocn, by the Laghmor Highlanders. Mr Jamieaon next gave the song, the " Maogr got's gathering " for which bo was enaoied. Mr J. Moßae danaod, m excellent style the Seauntrt.ua to the piping of Mr Urquhart, the piper to the Dunedin Caledonian Sooiety. Mr Urquhart showed himself to be aa adept on the pipes, and bis playing waa a great treat to the lovera of this music " Auld Lang Syne " by tho company concluded the entertainment. Mlbb Kidd acted as aooompanist on the piano to the vocal items, the Kyle party supplied violin music and Measra McKay, Mabin and dquhart Baw to the bag pipe muaio when It wua required. The concert, financially, should be a very great Buooeaa. A ball was subsequently held wbioh was well attended.
