The Rev J. S, Hill, of Auckland, last night conducted a very successful mission at Christ, ohuroh m connection with the V.M.C.A. He addressed large audiences m the Oddfellows' Hall during last week. Genera! Booth has just issued an appeal for 2000 offioers to be trained to go as mis,sionaries on behalf of the Salvation Army. It is, he states his intention to send bands of > Salvation missionaries to Zulultind and South Amerioa. A yeung engineer, impressed with the necessity for missionary work m British ( Guiana, has just thrown up his position, and gone to the headquarters of the army with the money to pay for a training that will qualify him to go and pilot a contingent of the army there. Appeals have come from Jamaica for officer- 1 , and as coon as the officers are ready the means will be found for despatching them and erecting a hall. The work has already begun m Jerusalem, and reinforcements are asked for. During the 12 months ending June no less than 1800 men and women offered themselves to beoome officers m the Salvation Army, the pay of whioh is — females (captains), 1.55; lieuten. ants, 12s ; males, 21s and 18s respectively, after all other expenses of the corps have been paid.
