[Per Press Association], Gisborne, Ootober 14. A large public meeting was held to urge the Legislature to give faoilities for the settlement of Crown and Native lands. Strong resolutions were passed on the subject and a deputation will prooeed to Wellington. The Harbor Board Committee and Borough Council have joined the movement. Mies Swan, of Auckland, has been appointed Matron of the Giaborne Hospital. Wellington, Ootober 14. Information haa been received that a Maori child named King was killed by being thrown out of a boggy on Featherston road to-day. The body was taken by the mother to the Papawai pah, Mr M. 0. Beck, the proprietor of the *' Wairarapa Observer," was to-day seriously assaulted by a well-known I bntcher m that town. The assault, It is said, was the outcome of the " Observer's " comment on the recent election and other local topics. The difference will be sifted m the R.M. Court. Mr George Cummins haa been entrusted with the task of building Hearn a racing skiff, m which he takes part m the Sydney soulling handicap. Sir John Hail left for Sydney this aftornoon. At the inquest on Arthur Moore, who shot himself at Oarterton, a verdict of temporary Insanity was returned. Greymouth, October 14 The engine-shed of Hungerford and McKay, railway contractors, was destroyed by fire this morning. They lose £809. The locomotives which were m the abed are recently from Home, having coat £1200. They received the worst damage from the fire, most of the patent metal and brass work being fused. The second engine was only partially burnt, but the third, and least valuable, was got out. They had a night watchman, whose duty it was to be there between 8 and 12, bat he had been In the habit of keeping at home till 3 and 4, and was m bed when the fire broke out. All the engines might have beensaved had not apanlobeen raised by someone calliug out, " Look oat boys, Bhe'll burst," when all ran away, About 40 men are thrown out of employment. It will require at least about a ooople of months before work can be resumed. One of the overseers passed the building at 12 30. There was then no sign of fire. The alarm was raised at 1 20. Chbistchuroh, Ootobor 14 I Greve de Brun, who was to-day oommitted for trial for alleged attempted arsoD, was committed for trial qn a further charge of stealing a quantity of knives and forks, towele, tobacco, and other artioles, from the Canterbury Club, where he was formerly employed as boots.
