SOCIAL AT METHVEN.

1 (From omt oto Correspondent ) Mr Hook, who has been Lead master of the District School for the last eighteen months, and is about to leave for the North Island owiDg to failing health, was entertained by a number of his friends last Monday evening to a social tea. Mr Grainger, assisted by Miss Grainger and Miss Scott, having charge of affairs it is needlesß to say that the arrangements were all that could be desired. Considering the very inclement weather there was a very good gathering, principally of the young folks of tbe township and district After ample justice had been done to the good thfngs provided, Mr Grainger, on behalf of the assembled company, ex pressed the regret they felt at losing bucli esteemed friends and neighbors as Mr and Mrs Hook, and stated that Mr Hook was always assiduous m the discharge of his duties; that both he and his "better half " were special favorites m the social circle-, as well as being ever ready to assist the sick and afflicted. He (Mr Grainger) trusted that a short rest from his arduous duties and tho milder climate of the North Island would soon restore Mr Hook to his wonted health and strength, and wished him, Mrs Hook and their family a pleasant voyage and every success m the<r new home. Mr Hook briefly thanked Mr Grainger and all the company for their kind wishes towards himself, Mrs Hook and family, and expressed their regret at leaving the district where they had made so many friends, and he trusted no enemies and assured them that ho would always remember the happy days ho spent m Metkven. After this the popular games and Bongs appropriate to such gatherings were commenced and carried on with great glee until the " wee ehort hours ayont the twal. ' Mr Grainger, ever mindful of the wishes of all, determined to have a continuation of the social on Tuesday evening, the weather being fine, to give those matrons whose offspring were too tender to face the storm of the previous night an opportunity of wishing Mr and Mrs Hook and family " God speed," and the gathering was as successful, if not more so, than its predecessor
