A. distressing suicide .pqourred today at Parnell, when a married woman named Mrs Louisa Osborne hanged herself from a beam In the soullery of her dwelling* houß9. Her husband and children were absent at the time, and on the former's return, he found his wife hanging by the clothes line, whilst a ohair was olose by, on whioh she had evidently stood to plana her head ln the noose. Mr Hunter, a neighbor, out the rope, bnt Ufa was extinct.
When the steamer Balmoral Castle, which arrived from London on Saturday, was three days out f torn Home, when the dead body of a man was found In one- of the coal bankers. He had evidently stowed himself away, and had been suffocated by coal dust. The woman Mary O'Connor, mother of the child recently found dead near Tbls tie Hotel, wbb brought up to-day at the Police Oonrt, charged, with Infant slaughter. The oase was *em%nded until Wednesday next. Bail was allowed, accused m £500, and two sureties of £250 each ; but as she was unable to obtain sureties, she was compelled to go to gaol to await trial.
At the Police Court to-day, William Smith, a youog man, was committed'for trial on the charge of obtaining £3' lOi ia goods, and 10 1 m money, from Mr N. Goldwatar, by means of a valueless cheque. '-"--■■: A petition to the House of Representatives, praying fcr the extension of the franchise to seamen and the prohibition of employment of cole red labor upon coasting vessels, la being extensively signed. Fonr Germans named W. Bargotte, Carl Bargotte, H. Henoh and Jean Wallick, were brought up at the Papaknra R.M, Court yesterday, charged with being concerned ln tha reoent eviction oise at Papaknra Valley, and with assaulting a man named White. They were oommitted for trial. v At a meeting of the Sjoth British Insurance Company to-day, a resolution was pissed affirming the desirability of resuming the half-yearly maeUngi. Messrs R, 0. Baralow and J Howard were re-elected direotots, and Mr T. W. Peacock, M H.R., replaoed the Hon H. Chamberlain, who retired from the directorate.
The City Hall waa crowded to-night on the oooaslon of the publio presentation by Mr J. 0. Firth of fifteen Martini-Henri rifles given by him to the Volunteer corps of the district for compaction ln shooting. There was a large attendance of Volunteers of the Auckland garrison, and the Mayor presided. The proceedings were characterised by much enthusiasm.

decided to write to the trustees of tha Church of England cemetery, expressing regret at the latters refusal to allow the Lodge fo erect an emblematical memorial stone over one of their members. Should
the refusal still be insisted on, the solicitor of the Lodge will be Instructed to proceed with the erection, and a petition wiii be presented to Parliament asking for an amendment m the Cemeteries Aot, to enable Lodges to ereot suitable memorials.
The Jubilee Exhibition of articles mora than 50 years old will be opened to-mor-row evening. His Excellency an Lsdy Jervois.will be present. Tbe Premier bas received a cablegram from the Premier of Yiotoria stating that the formal date for receiving applioacloni for apnea at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition is Slst Deoember next.
In the Supreme 0 jnrt the case Lahmana v Pfcesuix Fire Insurance Company, a olaim for £75 insurance on wine vanlts damaged by fire ln June last, and £25 damages for breach of contract, was heard,. Defendants refused to pay the inruranoe on the ground that the place was set on fire. A verdict was returned for plaintiff for £16. Greymouth, October 12.
A telegram from Lyell states that Walter Prlnoa's electric machinery for transmission of power at the United Alp ! ne was started on Saturday with every sueoess. The rpok-drlll apparatus whioh it drives is not quite completed, but a few days will see It finished, when* permanent working will commence, and it is expected that No. 7 level will ba driven at a rate of 150 feet per week.
