SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The usual inee«ing of the above was held on Thursday. Present — Meaars AllaD, Mnlligan, Lytte'ton, and String fellow. Mr Lyttelton was voted to the chair. AroLOGY. An apology was received from Mr Coster (Chairman) for unavoidable absence. MINOTES. The minutes of the last meetiog were read and confirmed. clerk's report. The Clerk reported that the Chairman had during the month accepted T. Oronin's tender for forming footpathß at 5a per chain, and for shingling same at 2s 5d per yard, forming Michael street at 10s 6d per chain — He also reported on the various works carried out during the month. The late storm water bad done but slight damage to the roads — The contractors have made good progress, but have been stopped during the late bad weather. — Du r ing the month the Chairman had let a tender for blinding shingle on roads where cuttings were, at 25s per ohain — Application has been made to the County Council for two acrea of land for a shingle pit on the Ferry .Reserve ; a pit was also required on R.B. 7114 GORSB GRUBBING. Mr Williams interviewed the Board and obtained permission to plough a portion of Sprott's road to destroy the gorse, on the usual conditions. SMALL BIRD'S NUISANCE. It was decided that the Board should give la Gd per 100 for small birds heads and eggs until next meeting, and that if the County Council give Is 6d, this to be subsidised by 6d by this Board. POISONED GRAIN. It was deoided to procure more poisoned grain for the use of the farmers STORM WATER CHANNBL. It waß rebolved that Messrs Coster and Lyttelton should inspect the storm watei channel complained of near the settlement, and report to the next meeting. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was received : — From Mr Wm. Anderson, asking th< Board, as it had made him no offer, t< forward him a cheque for £16 10s b] October 12th, being £7 10s for the shingl" taken from section 16215, and £9 fo damages incurred through loss of the ue of the land. — Resolved to forward saoai to the Board's solicitors From the Ashburton County Gonncil > water- race crossings. — Resolved that th Board was willing to look after the same It was also resolved tint the Clerk ant roemberß for each district should inepec the crossings, and call for tenders fo putting the same m thorough order. It was deoided to accept Mr Sprott' offer of a piece of lnnd for a shingle pi on ri.B. 27439. Mrs McCoy wrote, complaining of w» f e flooding her section through an impedi ment m the pipe. — The contractor's attec tion to be called to the matter. Mr L. Fordham wrote, asking if th Board would lease a portion of the roa leading from the pound to cemetery for or 7 years.— -Application not entertained. A similar application from Mr J, A Smith was not entertained. Mr Pyke, on behalf of the School Com rnittee, applied for the formation of a poi tion of Cridland street. — Resolved that i the Committee clear the gorßO oif, th road be formed and sown down m grass. Mr M'Anulty wrote, asking for an ex tension of time on his contract, an< offering to make a cutting for £10, whicl was not mentioned m his contract. - Resolved that he be informed that the cul ting was included m bis contract. Mr H. Harrison applied to have a roa near his property, skim ploughed, a8 i was heavily tueeocked, and the dange from fire was great. About 3\ miles. - Resolved to call tenders for the work A number of Bottlers wrote re sam blews m the settlement. — The- Clerk t instruct the contractor to blind the sam and shingle a portion of same. Mr J. Harrison wrote complaining abou a water race crossing on the Three Chaii Road. Men had been sent to do work others had been sent to undo it, and th water had overflowed ; it had cost hiu 7a 6d for a man working there, and h should be glad to have it refunded .- Resolved that this be inspected at th same time as the others, and the mone; to be refunded. A number of unsuccessful tenderers a the last Board's meeting wrote asking i the Board could find them some work.— The Clerk reported that two of the mci had got work. — It was decided that th Clerk should find them work on tin plantation. Mr Pyko wrote stating that 3 per cen would be allowed on the fixed deposit. The Commissioner of Crown Landi wrote re reserves. — These were not m th< district. Mr Gavin wrote advising the paymen of £4 18s Id rates on Crown Lands. The Wakanui Road Board wrots declining *o accept the offer made for th< Rakaia Board to tako over control of th< Boundary Road, as it considered tbt present arrangement was satisfactory, ant the road was now under repait. — Mi Mulligan said it was the wish of everj occupier en the road that a change shoulr be made, and a petition to the Coutio' nßking that the control be vested m this district was m course of preparation — Resolved that application be made to the Council at the next meeting to carry oui the wish of the ratepayers. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted ; — Sinking sump, D. Raady, at £3 ; metal ing Settlement Road, T. Cronin, at 10£ d per yard, and for reducing lull 40s. TBNDER CANCELLED. Mr Allan reported that he had inspected Haslett's work with the Clerk, and he had found It Wis not carried out to specification, In faot none of the work waa properly dODe. It wab resolved tbat Mr Haßlett's tender be" cancelled and that fresh tenders be called for the work. THE CLERKS HI?. Mr Allan moved tiat the present Clerk receive the usual notice, and that tendera be called for a man to devote his whole time to the duties of the Board. Messrs Mulligan and Strlngfellow thought it unnecessary to have a man all his time. Mr Allan nsoqrod the Board that money was being wasted ai the contractors were not properly supervised. Tie motion waa not seconded and lapßedi ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £189 13a 10 J, were passed for payments. RESIGNATION. Mr Allan tendered hia resignation m a member of the Board. He was not baoked up m studying the interests of the ratepayers, and he was certain tbo present system of overlooking was bad. APPLICATIONS. Mr Pyoroft applied to have Borce pipes pat through the road near his sections to take of storm water. He complained that he had applied 18 months ago and no notice had been taken of his request. Informed that the requirements would be looked into when other work of a similar nature was inquired into, Mr Haalett waited on the Board re sheep being impounded from a plantation. He waa informed that the poundkeeper had only done hia duty and hie atook had no right there. The Board then adjourned.
