Mr Purneil addressed a meeting of the electors at the Town Ha'?, Rakaia on Friday evening. About 160 were preaent. The chair waß taken by Mr J. M. Cambridge. Mr Purnell complained of the manner In which the present election was c inducted, by tho interference of Ministers of th* Crown travelling round the colony ot the public expense In the interests of their own supporters. He was much pleased that Sir R. Stoat had had his h»ir combed. Sir Juiiua had been to Aahburton and had really nothing of importance to say, and had certainly coma to asaiat Me Walker m hia canditare. Mr Purooll I continued stating that the country would never benefit whilst Sir Julius was m it There would not be a boom m it ia ten. years. The address was a resams of the one given at Hampstead m reply to Sir Julius Yogel He concluded by asking the electors to return him with a large majority. During hia address Mr Pomell was at tijiea interrupted bat otherwise the meeting was an orderly one. A number of questions were aakad and answered. Mr John Irwin proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker for his addreßS Mr John Holmes seconded this and regretted that (Mr Purnell) had was»ed ao much time on attacking and abasing Sir Julius Yogel. He was Bure that Sir Julius had no one In New Zealand equal to himself as a statesman. Whatever the present Government promised m the way of retrenchment would be carried out. Mr Purnell had published a statement that he (Mr Helmet) had oanvaeßed the district ia Mr Walker's interest ftom M»-ihven to Rakaia. This waa aba =lutely incorrect as he had only asked one man's support, at Lauriston. Mr Caygill epoke at some length and supported the vote of thanks concluding asking the electors to scratch Mr Walker's name off the voting papers The motion was carried and a vote of thanks to the chair conc-ud-d the meeting.
