f PUNISHING " THE NATIVES.
Auckland, Sep'ember 17 The Germans have issued a proclamath n that Tamasese is the rightful King of Samoa and that all Natives . mnst swear allegiance before the 15th. Two gun boats were sent round tne islands to enforce the proclamation. At Satopatea the Natives refused to recognise Tamasese and tore the notice down. The warship Sophie punished the village, burning 160 hons<s, eighty boata and canoes, shot 300 pigs, cut down all the breadfruits, cocanu'B and bananas. The Natives flsd to tbe bah. The Germans demand Malietoa's surrender under a penalty of severe punish* ment. The adherents of Malietoa declined, trusting to the aid of England and America. The Germans assert that their action was not taken m consequence of eny deoialou at the Washington Conference but because they could Btand Malietoa's weakness no longer. The Germans at Apia knew nothing of the Intention nntil the arrival of the squadron.
