The " Feotoral Cross - to be presented to I Dr Grimes, the new Oatholio Bishop oi I Ohrietohuroh, is very elegant, the design being I by Mr J. F. Stratz, 261, High street, Christ-, church. It is an Irish Trefoil Cross, i\ inohes m length, weighing 4 ounces m solid gold ) with a Bhamrook and lily entwined and em- r bossed, having the orest of the Bishop ' engraved m the centre. Attached ia a gold ' chain, with slide and tassle to match, weigh* I s ing 4 ounces. Mr Stratz has received the I ( order to manufacture tho above, which he is I l doing on the premises at Cbristohuroh. \ When a man beoomes a widower he soon learns what the financial worth of his wife was to him. When he is compelled to hire the food cooked, the garments made, the washing and ironing done, he finds that about one- half of his income is required to meet these outgoes. In a recent debate m the Italian Parliament it was officially Btated that the Government during the last twenty years had received no lees than 1900 millions of franos as the proceeds of State lotteries which had been held ; and as the expensee and prizes were all covered by the sum of 800 millions of francs, it follows that the net gain to the Treasury was 1100 millions' of franos, equivalent to 44 millions sterling. Of course, nothing was said of the demoralisation of the people by this method of raising money, or of the ruin whioh is often brought upon the " fortunate winners, Sir Henry Looh has received a communication from England to the effeot that the Gil chrisfc Annual Scholarship of £100, which has hitherto been open for competition amongst scholars of the Australian Colonies and Tasmania, would be withdrawn after the award had been made m connection with the examination to be held m January next, and that the Gilohrist Biennal Scholarship of £100, open to New Zealand aoholars, would be withdrawn at once. A " eooial," is to be held on Sept, SO, being promoted for the benefit of the funds oi the Ashburton Band. It will be remembered that a short time ago a " sooial " for a similar eubjeot was held, and m spile of the weather being most inolement, it was of a mosi en. joy able nature, though unfortunately the Band, m whose interest it was instituted, did not derive all tho pecuniary benefit they deserved. An exoellent programme has been Arranged for the forthcoming entertainment, and granted good weather the result should be very gratifying to the promoters. We hear that the Ashburton Fire Brigade contemplate holding a "sooial" gathering about Oct. 12th, under the auspices of the Volunteer Officers and of leading citizens. The proceeds are to be devoted towards defraying the trip of a team to the annual Fire Brigades' Demonstration. As the Brigade has never "gone round with the hat "jbefore it has]a natural disinclination to commence now, and therefore a very pleasant way of raising funds has been decided upon.
