The Maori Perjury Case
Auckland, Septea>ber 14. In the Maori perjuiycase, arising out of alleged rape at the Thames, the jury, who were locked up all night, disagreed, and were discharged this morning. Justice Ward said he had refrained from directing the jury plainlj, as ho had ordered the accused into custody on a fresh charge laid by the Crown. The Devonport Fire. An inquiry mo the fire at Devonport, which destroyed three houßes lately, wan held yesterday, and resulted m a verdict ! of " Incendiarism by come person unknown." Fire. Fbilding, Sapl ember 14 A destructive fire, m Fergu6Bon street, broke out early this morning. It com menced m Halliday's shop, which, alon^ with Kennedy's billiard saloon, and W. G\ Haybittle's grocer's shop, were completely destroyed. Bellrie's Empire hotel was Bayed with difficulty, although injury was done to the furniture by removal. The following are the insurances :—Kennedy's shop and Halliday'a property, £450 m tho Northern ; Haybittle's stock, £650, and building £250, m the South Brit.Bh ; Empire hotel and stock. £2100 m the South British. Halliday's stock was valued at £300, and Kennedy's at £30, uninsured. Haybittlo loses about £800. The total loss by the fire is about £3000, A New Scheme. Tatjjianga, September 14 The Goanty Eoglneer submitted to the Oouuoil a scheme for opening up country along the Coajt, by means of a steam tramway at a cost of thirty thousand, Sunday Trading. Wellington, September 14 At the R.M. Court to-day seventeen shopkeepers, principally tobacconists and fruiterers, were fined Is and costs for selling on Sunday. The police did not press for a heavy penalty, but morely wished to draw attention to the provisions of the Act. Coming Election. For Taurauga Ciptain Kerr has retired. More Golden Reefs Two parcels of quartz from the Browning's Pass reefs were tested m Auckland, and yielded respectively, the value £9 of 17a per ton, and lOdwts gold per ton. Another parcel from the same reef wa* tested by Professor Black, and yielded I one ounce per ton. Fire, Timaru, September 14 A fire occurred at Bruce's oatmeal mill to-day In consequence of the high wind total destruction was feared, but energy **k1 promptitude availed to save the BtrucPure. The damage is estimated at about £50.
