WAKANUI ROAD BOARD

A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday. Present — Meases M. Brace (Chairman), J. Brown, G. Ooe and W. T. Lill. CORRESPONDENCE. NEW WATtD. The Chairman reported that the petition praying for a redlvlslon of Warda had been examined, it was found that the petitioners had not complied with the aot, and though the Sarveyorhad informed him that is was the desire of the petitioners that the Board take the necessary etep3 to make the petition legal, he oonBidered this a very informal manner of proceeding and not part of the Board's duty, unless a petition was signed by a considerable majority of the whole of the ratepayers. Personally he had no objection whatever to a redivfaion, bat hu considered the Board should be approaohed m the proper manner. After considerable diaoaaslon m which the Board went minutely into the matter, it was resolved — "That it is the opinion of the Board that the aouth-weßt boundary of the proposed new oubdiviaion should be the centre of the Wakanui road from its junction with Ooohrane's Joad to the Beach road at Letham's corner, thence along the centre of the Beach road to the aea That tha north east boundary be the Seafield road. That the representation be aa follows:— Wakanui, one member; new bubdidvlon, two members; remainder of No* 3 Ward, two members, thereby making representation aooording to rateable value." — "That aa Boon an the petitioners comply with Sections 4. 16 and 26 of the Road Boardo Act, 1882, the Baaed will endeavor to have the boundaries gazetted." — "That a copy of these reßolutio/ia be forwarded to the patitionera." purveyor's report. (1). New Road — We have inspected the proposed extension of rosd between Sections —to Wilson'B Road Tbe longth of road to purchase will be 27 chains ; there will also be the same length to fence on one sirte. A slight deviation m the gully will save considerable work and expense. A cutting at each terrace, and a ford over the creek would require to be made before the road could be used . Our estimate to buy land and do work enumera'ed is £90. (2). McGuire'e Road — We are unable to procure particulars of this road, as it would seem that no survey has yet been made. We have written to tho Chief Surveyor on the subject. (3). Milton Road. —A large culvert on this road having become dangerous, we are having a fotd made m lieu thereof. (4). Cochrane's Road. — We have Had broken pipes m culvert removed so as to relieve the land above of water. We recommend a ford being made when ground is drier, numerous springs m the locality making it at present very wet (5 ) Chertsey Koad. — We have bad this road repaired from Winter's corner towards GuercFey. (6). Kale's Road.— The ruts on this ro»d, which were pretty numerous, have had attention. (7), Tuasocking. — Tenders were duly called for clearing certain roads m No. 3 Ward as authorised at last meeting.— P. Twoomey's tender at 4d per chain was accepted for the whole (8). New Koad through W. •Tamiaon's. — The 40 days' notice for objections to be received expired on the 23rd inst. Objections have been received from a number of ratepayers which the Board will have to consider, before doing which, however, they will have to appoint a time a&d place at which objectors may appear. (9) Winter's Road. — Tenders have been called for formation of part of this road, which will bo laid before you to-day. (10). Maintenance — The maintenance man's diary lies on tho table. Clause 1- — Matter deferred. Clause B—lt8 — It was resolved to hold a speolal meeting on Tuesday, September 20, that objaoto-s may appear m support of their petition. The remainder of the report was adopted. TENDERS. Jones and Oo's tender at 3s 9i per chain, for forming Winter's road was aooepted. DEPUTATION. Mr Adams waited on the Board and asked If they would erect a bank across the river road bo as to prevent the water that at time of flood came through the gaps m the embankment made by the settlers, damaging property and the roads farther down. Surveyors and members of the Ward to visit the road with power to act. MrGrayburn Interviewed the Board with reference to the bad state of the fences of the gravel pits adj lining hia land. He proposed that if the Board found him barb wire and staples andf£l he would erect bank and guarantee a live fence, ROAD TO OHERTSEY. The Surveyor stated that a deputation were to have come before the Board with reference to obtaining a direct road to Ohertaey or anyhow as far as Dromare, but after waiting some time they had left He was aware that a number of Bottlers were inconvenienced by there being no direct route from Dromore to Ashbttrton, and that representation had been previously made to the Plantation Board for land for road, whioh had been deolined. The Surveyor was directed to write to the authorities to ascertain if a road oould bo obtained from the Railway Reserve. WATBR-RAOE OONTRAOTS. The Surveyors were directed to draw the County Council's attention to the water-race contracts on the Baaoh road opposite Lownie'a and Meredith Wilson's. BOUNDARY ROAD. The Surveyor to instruct maintenance man to repair Boundary Road. After passing acoouuts the Board adjourned-
