Mr Palmer will meet the Rangitata electors m Ashburton m the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday next, at 7.30 p.m. Carefal preparations have been made for the social gathering at St. Stephen's Schoolroom this evening. The programme will include a number of string duets and trios, whioh should make a pleasant variety m the evening's amusement. Tea and refreshments will be served at nine o'clock. The following letters were received at the Ashbarton Post Offioe daring the month of July, and are now lying unolaimod : — Peter Chalmers, H. J. Hall, J. Jackson, C. J. Porter, Is&ao Eandle, S. Timms, and J. Smith. The Specialty Company gave a aeoond per* formanoe m the Oddfellows' Hall last evening to a good house. The programme whioh was a new one, was gone through to the evident ■atisfaotion of those present. H. Hooper and H. Masgravt were very successful m their songs and jokes, several of the looal hits bringing down the house. Songs were con*
tributed by Misses Normnn, Florence, Elliott, and others. The seoond part of the programme was a variety one, the most suoOfisful items being Musgrave'o clog danoe, H. Hooper's character (ketches and Miss A. Norman's Masher song. A eoreaming farce, entitled The Shaving Saloon, cent the audience home apparently delighted with their evening's entertainment. The Company left by the Express this morning for Timaru. The B.M. Court has been engaged all this morning and np to the time of our going to press with the case of Lambie v. Buekley. Owing to pressure on our spaoe we are oompelltd to hold over the report till to-morrow. The twenty-four hoars' walking match between Oapt Cotton, of Ghriitehurch, and Joe Scott, at Danedin, was concluded last night, Scott winning by four laps. A seal, 8 feet 4 inohes long, was captured by Mr Watson at Kyla on Monday. The Master of the Home desires to acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt ef the following: — Parcel of books from Mr Hardy, Bakaia ; seoond-hand clothing from Mitchell and Tamer ; newspapers from Mr Paul ; shrubs from Mr Bloomfield ; and the remains of jthe supper from the Committee of the Hunt Clab, for the use of the inmates. David Little, a boy, recently reoovered a verdict m the Melbourne Supreme Court for £750 from his employers, Messrs Alfred Shaw and Co., tinsmiths, for injuries to bis leg, received when at work at a steam grindstone. At a meeting of the TaranakJ Agricultural Society it was stated (hat the liabilities (act) were £37. A bankrupt must be able tg ■wear he paid m fall. At the Wakamarina gold diggings it is stated that some of the miners have done fairly well lately.
