Opposition Steamers. Auckland, September 1. The Seamen's Union have secured three steamer*, two from Australia and one from Wellington, to run opposition to the Northern S.S. 00. New Baths. Wellin,<jtq^, September 1. A proposal was made to the Harbor Board for a long lease of the foreshore site, at present occupied by the Thorndon baths, with the intention of forming a Company to build new and commodious premises. The Board found themselves unable to grant more than fourteen years and the idea was dropped. The need of it is, however, argent, and probably an attempt will be made to obtain by legislation a longer and mere certain tenure of the side. More Schools. It is estimated there are 1200 children In Wellington who do not attend school, and there is no aooomodation for them More schools are badly needed, especially m the Te Aro dlstriot, but the Board has no fane's. It has appointed a Committee to deal with the question and report at a future meeting. N.Z. Rifle Asrociation. Blenheim, September 1. At a largely attended meeting of present and intending members of the New Zaaland Rifle Association, resolutions ez> pressing the following opinions were passed :— }. That the meeting should be held m March. 2, The exclusive uaes of the Remington-Lee rffle, with a stage at 1000 yards, and the ether suggestions m the Chairman's proposed programme was generally approved of, excepting that dlstriot team matches were regarded as a great mistake. 3. That Company team matohes should be continued as here before. 4. A proposal emanating from Dunedln to continue using the Snider rifle was strongly condemned.
