Copt. J. W. Francis, Adjutant of the Ist Canterbury Battalion of Volunteers, has been gazetted to the majority rendered vacant bj the resignation of Major Wolfe. No officer of the Canterbury contingent better deserves promotion than Major Francis, who haß held a commission m Canterbury longer than any other officer m the province, with the sole exception of Colonel . Lean. He was for many years Lieut, of the City Guards, and has for the. past two years acted as Adjutant of tbe Battalion, so he is qualified by ample experience to fill h : s new post. The body of a man, apparently drowned, was found on the Waimakiriri river bank, near the outfall of Stewart's Gully. The body is supposed to be that of Henry Firmis, who suddenly left his home m Kaiapoi on May 21st last, and has not since been heard of. He waß supposed to have committed suicide from expressions he made, and the police, for a time after, made a diligent search of the river and banks without avail. The nominations for Christchurch South are fixed for Sept. 16th ; Kaiapoi, 17th; Heathcote and Ashley, 19th.
