ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN PERSIA
A traveller m Persia relates the following incident ;—" I was on a visit to ft judge when o man was brought m who stontly denied the offenoe with whloh ha was charged. The btgltrbtg (judge) scat for a whip. ' I vow lam innooint,' laid the accused, as he crossed his hands over his breast, at tha same time jtretahlng forward one of his fingers. The minions of justice stood reviy to strike at a signal from the jadge, who fixed his eyes on the breast of the prisoner and exclaimed ' Yon are guilty 1* •By thy venerabl* head, I vow I am not guilty!' protested the aqcused, now raising two fingers. Thli piroooss was continued until he at last stretched out five fingers of eioh hand, when the begkrbeg remarked, ' Good, let him go he is innocent.' I learned after* wards that by raising . hli finger the prisoner meant the judge to understand that he offered one tonan (abont tea shillings) for bia release, and had been compelled to raise the amount by successive bids to ten ton»ni (£6), m order to satisfy the demandi of Persian jaitloe.'
