PROGRESS OP SETTLEMENT
» It will interest our readers to learn that for the quirter ended June 30 last, 1058 Bottlers were placed on the Grown lands of the oolony on settlement condition!, the. area taken up being 102,000 acres. Of tbji number 243 are village homestead special settlers. In addition, 445 settlers took up holdings averaging 103 acres each, from July 1 to August 15, and 115 village homestead settlers have been located on their sections ; 'bat nothing further will be done under this system till the sanction of Parliament be obtained, m accordanoa with a promise made by Mr liallance la the House that he would settle 150 families on the land, which has now been done. Survey* of additional areas are, however, being made and got ready for settlement, In view of further Parliamentary eanotioa being obtained It is a faot worth recording that whereas for many yean prior to 1886 only 800 families had been located under settlement conditions, during the last financial year the number was 2424.
