THE FROREN MEAT TRADE

+ In the intervals of " Jublleefng " writes the " Star's " London correspondent Mr J.C. Brown, M.H.R , hasbetn continuing his investigations into the working of the frczen meat trade, and made some rather valuable discoveries. One conclusion he has come to, he tellß me, is that if the sale of frozen mutton is to be successfully pushed m the North and West of England It will be neceßiary to send cargoes direct to other ports than London. Toe expenr e of transmitting the meat to the country by rail ia enormous and eatß up all the profit. It cost*, m point of fact, more to send, a caress from Londoa to Manchester than to bring it from New Zealand. Mr Brown means to visit Bristol before his return, and hopes to arrange for the recaption of a trial cargo of frczm mnttoD. There can be no question that meat should be sent to Liverpool district; The good old town (or " oltyj" I suppose It must now be called) is within easy reach of countless manufacturing centres, which would jamp at good and cheap mutton. Unfortunately, ..New Zealand mutton 1b uot particularly cheap retail, even m London now. r J he middlemen's charges are bo high that evea big dealers like the Leadeuhall Market folks seldom care to sell under about lOd alb. Others get rid of the difficulty by o&lling importations from other countries New Zealand mutton and vending it as suoh. I am myself quite convinced of one thing : the salvation of the frozm meat trade lies m the unlocking of other port* than London— Bristol, Liverpool, and Hull especially.
